Even so, he returns to town, only to discover that Otto, a fellow citizen of Mithra, has been turned to crystal. After Alto accepts, the voice instructs him to 'tune the girl,' and Alto is transported into the spirit world in Lisette's heart. After Alto reassures Lisette that the two of them will find a way to fix things and change their village back to normal, the two of them return to Mithra, Lisette having become the Water Witch due to her absorption of the Water Qualia.Upon witnessing the tuning, Hilda instructs Dante to kill Lisette and capture Alto. Dante is unable to, and Hilda attempts to use her Song of Ruin on the two.

However, before that can happen, the Royal Knights, led by, appear and force Hilda and Dante to retreat.Chapter 1Alto and Lisette are taken to the Royal Capital Lambert by Klaus and his knights and are brought before. Anastasia informs the two of the Anthem, an ensemble piece which will undo Hilda's crystallization, and asks Lisette to lend her newfound Witch powers to the cause.

Though Lisette is still unable to sing, being a Witch, she is inducted into the 9th Regiment, a knight squad whose purpose is to gather the Witches to perform the Anthem.Alto, determined to fight alongside Lisette to save the world and their village, goes to the selection exam to join the 9th Regiment the next day and spars with 9th Regiment members. Successfully completing the exam, Alto becomes a royal knight alongside Lisette. He is then taken around the barracks and shown the many shops he can go to by Rusty. With the other members of the 9th, Alto sets out to recruit the remaining three Witches to bring the Anthem Program to fruition.Chapter 2The 9th Regiment is given the by Queen Anastasia as a symbol that they were sent by royalty, and they go to the harbor town of Port Noir, seeking out the Wind Witch. When they get there, the town mayor, Bonanza, informs them that he exiled her due to the townspeople's hatred of her and that her current place of residence is unknown. However, the merchant gives the 9th a tip: go to the Windy Hills. The 9th investigates the hills but are only able to find the Wind Witch's familiars.

The next day, the 9th Regiment goes back to investigate again. Alto, who was left to guard the camp, leaves his post to save a from a drugged man, and encounters a girl called, who gives Marco some medicinal herbs and takes Alto to her shack, hoping to hear his knowledge of the world. However, the two are interrupted by a monster attack, and Popo summons familiars to help her, revealing that she is the Wind Witch. She refuses to come with the 9th Regiment, saying that Bonanza tasked her with protecting the town without allowing her to return because 'nobody likes' her. Bonanza confirms this upon the 9th Regiment's questioning of him, and Alto, infuriated by this, returns to visit Popo the next day because he 'doesn't think that she should be alone.' Popo tells him that he shouldn't visit anymore because he'll be hated if he's seen with her and leaves him. The next day, after the 9th is given orders to apprehend Bonanza, they return to Port Noir and have to fight Popo, who was decieved by Bonanza into thinking the 9th was trying to harm the town.Alto with the Song Stone.Popo flees after the fight, and the 9th follows Ewan to Bonanza and Popo's location: a windmill outside of town, filled with mopium plants, an illegal drug.

Popo falls into despair after Bonanza informs her that her power was used to cause the growth of such a dangerous drug and is consumed by black flame. Her spirit world consumes the 9th Regiment, and Alto hears the mysterious voice instructing him to 'tune the girl' once more. Alto tunes Popo, telling her that even if she was tricked into making a mistake, she can still make up for it, the 9th will be by her side, and that she is not a bad person. The 9th Regiment and Popo return to the real world, but are surrounded by Bonanza's forces. Unexpectedly, the Song Stone begins to shine and flies to Alto, who hears the mysterious voice telling him to 'conduct the girl.'

Alto goes to Popo and conducts her, turning the tide of the battle in the 9th's favor and letting them defeat and arrest Bonanza. Popo and Ewan join the 9th Regiment and return to the capital with them. That night, he talks to Popo in his room, and Popo thanks him for freeing her and letting her see the world herself.Chapter 3The next day, Alto is summoned by Anastasia, who informs him that he is a Conductor, a being with the ability to amplify a Witch's power (conducting) and purify their hearts (tuning). She also tells him that his power has not been seen since a thousand years ago, when the hero Elcrest used his Conductor power to recruit the Witches to subdue god, and informs him of the existence of the Tuning Hall, a facility run by the Royal Musician for the Conductor to tune in. Alto leaves Anastasia and goes to talk to Popo, an activity which is interrupted by the appearance of heart chains on her soul. Medea approaches Alto and explains that the chains represent the negativity-insecurities, fears, flaws-in a Witch's heart, which is what tuning helps the Witches learn to deal with and live with, and takes Alto, Popo, and Lisette to the Tuning Hall. Alto tunes Popo a second time and encounters her, who represents in this case her fear of making a mistake and becoming hated by her friends and the people of the capital.

After reassuring her shadow, Alto successfully completes the tuning. The 9th Regiment then departs for the smithing city of Amatsu, at the base of Gohra Volcano, to meet with the the Fire Witch, the Priestess of Amatsu. They arrive in the middle of the three-day Fire Festival, where the Priestess must sing her song in order to prevent Gohra Volcano from erupting for another year. When they reach the shrine where Sakuya resides, they are stopped by her shinobi bodyguard, who, after briefly mistaking them for intruders, takes them to Sakuya. Sakuya says that she will come with them under the conditions that she fulfill her duty as Priestess and calm the volcano first, which means waiting until the end of the festival. In the middle of this meeting, Sakuya, Nonoka, and the 9th Regiment are attacked by the Harbinger minions, dekurin, and Alto conducts Popo to help defeat them.

Because of this danger to Sakuya, Klaus and Archibald promise to return to Amatsu with more knights to guard Sakuya. The next day, Alto, along with Lisette and Popo, is dragged off to Amatsu by Rusty to go have some fun at the festival while waiting for it to end. While they are there, Rusty decides to try to get Alto to shake Sakuya's hand at a designated meet-and-greet, but when they get to the shrine, they find that it has been cancelled for singing practice for Sakuya. Undeterred by this, Rusty sneaks Alto, Lisette, and Popo into the shrine. In the shrine, the group finds a door and hears voices coming from inside. To everyone's shock but Alto's (who figured that Sakuya seemed a little too perfect at first), the voice is Sakuya, saying cruel things about Klaus, Rusty, and Archibald to Nonoka and berating her, sending her off to distract the knight guards so that she can have some free time.

Sakuya senses the group, and they panic. Rusty ties Alto up as bait, and he and the two Witches flee, apologizing.Alto is enlisted into doing what Sakuya wants, since she doesn't want the secret of her true personality getting out and ruining her required 'pure' idol image. She tells him to come to Gohra Volcano alone the next day, and when he does, she reveals that she has somehow lost the ability to sing and she enlisted his help both because he's a Conductor and because she needs someone to guard her while she practices in secret.

However, the practice is interrupted by Nonoka, who thinks Alto is trying to kidnap Sakuya, and the 9th Regiment, who lured some monsters away from the town up onto the volcano. After everything is sorted out, Alto returns to the capital. The next day, Nonoka brings Alto to Sakuya again, and Sakuya takes him as escort on her yearly procession rather than Nonoka. Afterward, Alto questions why Sakuya is avoiding Nonoka and hiding her not being able to sing from her, especially since Nonoka is her closest friend. Sakuya snaps at Alto, revealing her true feelings about becoming nothing to Nonoka if she reveals it to her. Afterward, she practices, and is suddenly able to sing again.

She leaves, and Alto talks to Nonoka, who was watching the two of them. Nonoka affirms her loyalty to Sakuya, and Alto leaves Sakuya in Nonoka's care until the festival ends. However, on the day of the ceremonial rite, Sakuya is again unable to sing. In the confusion, Dorothy appears and mocks Sakuya before attacking. The 9th Regiment seemingly defeats Dorothy, but that is revealed to be a trick, as Dorothy reappears and kidnaps Sakuya, bringing her to Gohra Volcano's crater, where Dorothy devises an idea to let the volcano erupt. The volcano starts to erupt, and the 9th Regiment, figuring that Dorothy took Sakuya to the volcano, rushes there. At the volcano, Dorothy attempts to kill Sakuya, but she is blocked by Nonoka, who takes the attack for her. Unfazed by this, Dorothy prepares to throw Sakuya into the lava, but Sakuya resists, saying that it is her duty to sing.

At these words, Alto sees heart chains, and asks to tune Sakuya to make it so she can sing, which Sakuya accepts. Alto enters Sakuya's heart and finds her many shadows, who all represent different fronts that Sakuya puts up to hide her true self.

After Alto and the 9th defeat Sakuya's shadows, Sakuya herself appears, angry that they are intruding in her soul. Alto realizes Sakuya's fears, goes to her, and tunes her, telling her to trust in her true self and acknowledging how damaging the Priestess role is for her.The 9th Regiment returns to the real world, and Alto conducts Sakuya, which lets the 9th defeat Dorothy. The 9th prepares to arrest her, but Hilda and Dante show up and protect her. Hilda greets Alto and Lisette, who react angrily to her.

Hilda promises to kill every witch if the Queen continues with the Anthem Program, and she then leaves. After going back to Amatsu so that Sakuya can complete her performance, Sakuya and Nonoka join the 9th Regiment and return to the capital with them. In his room, he has a conversation with Sakuya, where Sakuya thanks him for helping her regain her singing ability.Chapter 4Since the 9th Regiment has some free time while the Earth Witch is being searched for, Alto gets time off, which he plans to use to sleep. However, he is tasked with showing the other team members around town and bonding with the Witches by Klaus. He does just that, taking the Witches around town to check out food places. Unexpectedly, the group finds Klaus at a cafe, and even more unexpectedly, he turns out to be the previously mentioned famous food critic Mr.

Alto is both confused and impressed at Klaus's skill at writing. The next night, Alto finds Klaus and in a panic because of Queen Anastasia leaving the castle and exploring around the town. Alto promises to help them find her, and after a while, he discovers her, disguised as a regular citizen, being harassed by two men, who are trying to trick her out of money. Alto intervenes, and Anastasia asks Alto to accompany her to a place said to be unsafe for her. This place turns out to simply be the tavern, and after Alto and Anastasia listen in on some conversations, Anastasia reveals that she wanted to go there because she wants to know of the citizen's opinions so that she can better her country. Later, Anastasia gets incredibly drunk, and Alto has to walk her home. Alto encounters Elmar along the way, and Elmar helps Alto get Anastasia back to the castle. The next day, Alto hears an unfamiliar song and goes to investigate.

At the observatory, he finds that a mysterious little girl is singing it. She notices Alto and says that she finally found him before passing out. Alto takes her to the infirmary, but when she wakes up, she has lost her memory of everything but her name:. The 9th Regiment decides to take Marie into their care until they can find her family, but even after asking and searching around the capital, Alto and Marie still come up empty.

Eventually, Marie ends up staying in Alto's room.Chapter 5A magical barrier is found in the Mujabalaar Desert, the area where Kashmistan, the residence of the previous Earth Witch, formerly stood. Thinking that the Earth Witch is probably there, the 9th Regiment prepares to set off, and Klaus and Rusty relate the story of what happened to the previous Earth Witch, who was lord of Kashmistan: three years ago, she was killed by, a Harbinger and former Knight Grand Master, who allegedly also started the fire during the incident, destroying Kashmistan completely and killing many.Once the party reaches the barrier in the Mujabalaar Desert, Klaus orders Alto to break it with the Conductor's power of entering a spirit world, since the barrier itself is essentially a giant spirit world. Alto breaks it and the 9th enters. They attempt to get to a caravan that Nonoka spots to ask for information, but the path is blocked by the mercenary, whose job is to prevent anyone from getting through to the area past the barrier. After defeating Keith, they go to the caravan, Kajar, and try to ask for supplies and information, only to be met by a hostile reaction They return to Lambert in low spirits, and Alto goes to the tavern, where he finds Rusty, who tells him about why he especially seemed to be agitated: his past relationship to Hrodulf, who was his mentor and father figure.Later, the 9th Regiment sets off for the desert again but continue to fail to find any leads on either Keith or the Earth Witch. However, they are then approached by twin sisters and, who say that they can lead them to where Keith, at least, is.

The sisters take the 9th Regiment partway to the city of Kashmistan and then leave, since Mordimort seems agitated by going there.Once the 9th enters Kashmistan, they find that it looks good as new, with no signs of fire at all. In the city are Hrodulf and Keith, who are fighting. The 9th battle the two men for a while, then Hrodulf retreats, Rusty running after him in a rage. Alto tries to stop Rusty, then collapses to the ground in pain. Scenes from the Kashmistan incident flash through his head, including the voice of, the previous Earth Witch, and images of Niki and Mordimort surrounded by fire.

Alto passes out completely, and when he awakens in the capital's infirmary, it is at least a day later. Centipede video game platforms. Worried about Rusty, Alto goes to check on him, but Rusty snaps at him and shuts himself in his room. The 9th returns to the desert once more to search, but Niki approaches the group again in a panic. She begs them for medicine to ease a fever that Mordimort has caught, and the 9th splits up so that they can both search and help Niki. Alto takes the Witches, who have healing magic and medicine, to Niki's camp to help Mordimort.

They treat Mordimort, and she wakes in the middle of the night after a nightmare, her fever having broken. Mordimort reveals to Alto that she is still traumatized by what happened three years ago and asks for Niki. Alto leaves the tent to find Niki outside.

Niki then reveals herself as Earth Witch and asks Alto to take care of Mordimort. Keith knocks Alto out, thus revealing that he was working for Niki, and he and Niki go with Hrodulf, who has appeared, so that Niki and Hrodulf can settle the score from three years ago.Alto sees more scenes of the Kashmistan incident but is woken up by the rest of the 9th Regiment, who has returned from their fruitless searching. In a panic, Alto tells the other members about what happened with Niki and the group sets off to the Kandaar Hills, where Niki, Keith, and Hrodulf were headed. The 9th Regiment arrives just before Niki and Hrodulf fight, and the other Harbingers appear. The 9th and the Harbingers fight, and the 9th is almost overwhelmed, but then appears with several angels and evens the odds.

The 9th believes they've won, but Hrodulf manages to get to Niki. Niki, rather than die at his hands, blows herself up in a burst of energy.

The Harbingers leave, thinking themselves victorious in their attempt to destroy the Earth Qualia.Keith leaves to tell Mordimort of what happened to her sister, and Alto follows him, worried about Mordimort. The rest of the 9th go with Alto, save for Rusty, who goes off somewhere on his own. Alto rushes ahead of the 9th, and the barrier goes up again behind him, trapping him inside and leaving the rest of the 9th outside.Once Alto gets to Niki's camp, he finds Mordimort building a mud doll and mumbling to herself about how she needs to make a new big sister. Confused and saddened, Alto leaves the tent to find Keith outside and talks to him about the contract that he made and how it's almost up.

Suddenly, the entire caravan starts to fall apart and glitch, the people in it revealing their true forms as mud dolls, and Alto sees flashes of a scene of Niki giving Mordimort Sayija's Earth Qualia. Alto panics and runs inside to get Mordimort, who yells at him that she needs to make more. Alto sees a scene from three years ago of Niki dying in Mordimort's arms. The entire surroundings dissolve into burning Kashmistan, and Alto realizes that Mordimort is the real Earth Witch and that the whole area is a spirit world.Rusty and Hrodulf come into the city, and Alto becomes confused. Rusty and Hrodulf fight, but their fight is abruptly cut off when Rusty and Hrodulf's negative emotions cause the spirit world to become unstable.

Hrodulf leaves, and Alto, Rusty, and Keith are joined by the rest of the 9th Regiment, who somehow got through the barrier. Alto and the 9th fight their way through the many familiars that Mordimort summoned, and Alto gets near enough to Mordimort to tune her, telling her that she can't keep fooling herself and that she needs to live. Niki's spirit joins Alto in convincing her sister, and together, they convince Mordimort to leave her spirit world. Once they are back to reality, everything Mordimort created disappears, and she and Keith join the 9th Regiment and return to the capital. That night, Alto has a conversation with Rusty, and Rusty reveals to Alto that Hrodulf wanted him to join the Harbingers and told him they were trying to save the world. Alto feels that the Harbingers may have a reason behind their actions that they don't know, but he returns home anyway, where he finds Mordimort in his room.

He has a conversations with Mordimort, and she thanks him for convincing her to live and talks about how she feels about the capital, at which Alto says that she seems comfortable. The other Witches, save for Lisette, then come into Alto's room and invite Alto and Mordimort to the tea party that the rest of the Regiment is having, which Alto accepts.Chapter 6With all the Witches, the Anthem Program can finally commence. However, Lisette is unable to sing.

The 9th Regiment decides to go to and see if she can do something to make it so that Lisette can sing. Alto attempts to cheer Lisette up by hanging out with her, but she declines and leaves Alto.Once the 9th Regiment finally go to Veronica's lab, Alto and Lisette are called into a small tuning room that Veronica has at the back of the lab.

After being asked by Veronica to tune Lisette, Alto discovers that he is unable to tune her. However, Veronica is able to help Alto expand Lisette's spirit world. Once there, Veronica fixes Lisette's and Alto's connections to the Water Qualia, and the group then exits the spirit world. However, Lisette is still unable to sing and Veronica suggests that Alto and Lisette work out whatever emotional problem is preventing Lisette from singing.

The 9th Regiment returns to the capital, and that night, Lisette comes into Alto's room and asks him to tune her later so that she can sing, to which he agrees. The next day, Klaus enters Alto's room and tells him to be sure not to go out alone at night, as he suspects that the Harbingers may strike soon. Alto then goes to the Tuning Hall with Lisette and attempts to tune her, but he is still unable to and, out of concern for Lisette's safety, decides to stop for the day, even though Lisette wants to keep going. The next day, Alto is hard at work studying various papers about tuning to see if he can figure out why he is unable to tune Lisette. Lisette enters once more and asks to be tuned again. Alto reluctantly agrees again, and the two of them go back to the Tuning Hall. Alto is still unable to tune her, though, and the two of them head back to Alto's room for the night. In Alto's room, Alto and Lisette have a conversation, where they reminisce about their past in Mithra Village, and Lisette suggests that she sleep in Alto's room again.

Alto protests, saying that the rest of the 9th would take it as though the two of them were dating, and Lisette quickly says that she doesn't see him that way. The other Witches then come into the room and reveal that they heard the whole conversation, and Sakuya says that Lisette should stay in Alto's room and stop denying her true feelings about Alto. Lisette, distressed and confused about her feelings, runs out of Alto's room, and Alto, concerned, goes after her and finds her in the observatory, where Lisette questions how she feels about Alto and if her caring for him is truly just a purely platonic, familial-esqe emotion, then runs away again.Alto, confused, goes back to the barracks, only to be interrupted by Marie, who says that she senses something bad happening. The alarm bell then rings, signaling that the Harbingers have invaded the capital. Alto then realizes that he failed to keep people from being alone at night, since Lisette is out alone in the city, and the 9th Regiment frantically searches the streets for Lisette. The 9th finally finds Lisette lying motionless on the ground with the Harbingers standing above her.

Enraged, Alto and the rest of the 9th fight the Harbingers, but they escape. The 9th brings Lisette to the Infirmary, where she remains motionless. Alto goes and gets Veronica, who explains that the source of this affliction is the Carbuncle: a dagger owned by Hilda which can kill a Witch and destroy her Qualia and which must be broken to break the curse on Lisette. Veronica then leaves, and the 9th Regiment, having no idea where the Harbingers' base is, are aggravated. However, Giselle then enters and tells the 9th that the Harbingers' base is in the northernmost province of Soi Truga, in the destroyed city of Fahrenheit. Without any other choice, the 9th decides to trust Giselle's information and search in Fahrenheit. The next day, the 9th Regiment goes to Fahrenheit, and Alto is told the history of the region: that Hilda once ruled an empire from Fahrenheit, and that a civil war broke out where Hilda crystallized her citizens to save herself.

The Harbingers attack the 9th at Fahrenheit, and the fight goes until Hilda shows up to finish the 9th herself. Giselle and then appears with her angels, attacks the Harbingers, and fires at Hilda with a laser cannon.

Hilda avoids the blast, but the ground starts to crack open due to the force of the cannon firing, Alto in the middle of it. Hilda teleports down and yells at Alto to get down, and Alto and Hilda fall beneath Fahrenheit.Alto awakens in the underground part of Fahrenheit with Hilda. The two converse for a while, and then Alto asks for the Carbuncle. Hilda holds it out to Alto, revealing herself to be injured, and asks Alto to kill her. Alto realizes that Hilda let herself be injured to save him, and is conflicted.

He demands to know why she saved him and why she crystallizes the world, but Hilda refuses to answer. Alto destroys the Carbuncle, dispelling the curse on Lisette, and again asks Hilda why she saved him. She answers that she promised Elcrest, and she reveals that she has lived for one thousand years to fulfill her promise to him. Alto is confused by this answer, and Hilda again asks him to kill her.At that moment, Alto hears Rusty and the rest of the 9th calling for him, and Hilda attacks Alto, saying that he will regret not killing her and that she will fulfill her promise to Elcrest and protect the world at all costs.

She then leaves, and Alto goes to the rest of the 9th and tells them that he destroyed the Carbuncle. The 9th Regiment prepares to leave, but Hilda appears again with the other Harbingers and attacks the 9th. The battle becomes desperate, and the 9th are on the edge of losing as Hilda sings her Song of Ruin to crystallize them.

However, Giselle appears again and attacks the Harbingers. Regardless of this, the Harbingers continue attacking the 9th, and Hilda tries to sing her song again.Alto and Lisette calling out to each other. However, at that moment, Lisette is transported into the battlefield by Marie. Alto goes to her and is transported into her spirit world. There, Lisette admits that she has been lying about her feelings about him and that she truly cares romantically for him.

Lisette affirms her desire to protect the world and those she cares about, and she and Alto leave the spirit world. The rest of the 9th is overjoyed by Lisette being safe, and Alto conducts Lisette, letting her sing for the first time and letting the 9th successfully push back the Harbingers. The 9th Regiment returns to the capital, and Lisette thanks Alto for helping her out and kisses him on the cheek, at which Alto freaks out. The two awkwardly part, returning to their rooms.Chapter 7Since Lisette is now able to sing, the Witches begin practicing the Anthem, Alto coming to check up on them every so often. Eventually, troubled by Hilda's words about Elcrest in Fahrenheit, Alto tells Lisette about it and asks Lisette to tell him about Elcrest.

Lisette relates a much more accurate version of Elcrest's story than the one she told at the beginning, and she mentions that Elcrest's allies were the first king, Xeno, and the Witches from a thousand years ago. At this, Alto brings up the possibility of Hilda having been Elcrest's ally, since she can use her time powers to prevent herself from aging and since she mentioned that she has survived for one thousand years. However, Alto and Lisette cannot figure out what this could mean about Hilda's promise, but they resolve to stop her from crystallizing the world anyway.Later on, the 9th Regiment is granted a vacation to an Amatsu hot springs.

During this, Alto is dragged kicking and screaming into spying on the Witches and apologizes profusely afterwards. The Witches eventually forgive him.The next day, after checking up on the Witches' practice, Alto encounters Giselle again, thanks her for helping out the 9th so often, and expresses the desire to be friends with her. Giselle has trouble comprehending Alto's words, but she does not dislike them, and she bids goodbye to him and leaves. The day after that, Klaus comes around to Alto's room and tells him that the Anthem will be performed in the next day.

Alto is excited by this, but goes out into the city anyway. There, he finds Anastasia in her civilian disguse, who brings him to the treatment center where all the crystallized citizens are being held.

Anastasia admits her fear of not being able to do anything as a queen to him, but Alto reassures her that she is a great queen and that they couldn't have saved the kingdom if it wasn't for her. The Witches then appear and reaffirm their determination to save the kingdom.Chapter 8The day of the Anthem arrives. The 9th Regiment assemble in the Anthem Hall so that the Witches can perform the Anthem.

However, before they can start, the Harbingers arrive at the gate of the city and Hilda sings her Song of Ruin, preventing them from doing it. The members of the 9th Regiment who are not Alto, the Witches, or Klaus leave to go intercept the Harbingers. While the other members are gone, Alto and the Witches wait anxiously, and Anastasia arrives.Hilda and the Harbingers finally get into the Anthem Hall, having made their way past the other members of the 9th, and Hilda asks Anastasia to call off the Anthem Program, saying that she is trying to preserve the world with her crystals and that the Anthem will lead to ruin. Anastasia refuses, and Hilda says that she will just kill her if she refuses and asks whose idea it was to use the Anthem.

Anastasia reveals that Klaus first came up with the idea, and Hilda is shocked by this, questioning how just a knight could know about the Anthem. Klaus tells Anastasia to give the order to apprehend Hilda, and she does. The Harbingers are defeated by the Witches, Alto, and Klaus, and Hilda begs them one more time not to sing the Anthem. The Witches perform the Anthem anyway, the power being amplified by Alto, and Hilda's crystals are dispelled.

The 9th Regiment and the citizens of the kingdom rejoice. However, at that moment, the ground starts to shake, the sky turns orange, and a tree comes down from the moon and slams into the Earth, angels coming down it. The angels start to slaughter the people of the world, and the 9th panics, unable to understand why this is happening when the Anthem appears to have been successful, and they turn to Klaus to lead them. However, Klaus reveals himself as Xeno, the first king of Regnant from one thousand years ago, and reveals that this was his plan: to reawaken god with the Anthem so that she could rain destruction down on humanity once again. Xeno stabs Anastasia, and Hilda realizes that he has been tainted by god. Alto demands to know what they are talking about, and Xeno reveals that Alto is actually the legendary hero Elcrest from one thousand years ago.

Alto's head begins to ache, and he collapses to the ground in pain.Xeno starts to leave, but Hilda attacks him in an attempt to stop him. However, he takes her down, and the Harbingers, enraged, also attack him, and they are also shot down by him. Giselle comes into the Hall and goes to Xeno's side, revealing that she was working for him the whole time. Xeno orders Giselle to destroy Lambert, and she complies, bringing several angels in to kill the 9th.The 9th and the Harbingers attempt to survive the battle, but they are hardly able to do anything to the angels. Hrodulf then tells the 9th and the rest of the Harbingers to leave and save the civilians, saying that he will take it from there. The group escapes while Hrodulf holds off the angels.Alto holding the dying Anastasia. They get all the people out of the quickly collapsing castle, then go out into Main Street, where they set Anastasia down. Lisette attempts to heal her, but her emotions are in too much turmoil to do it.

Anastasia tells the group to stop trying to save her and laments her failures. With her final breaths, she requests that Archibald help the people of Lambert, that Elmar make sure the 9th is not blamed, and that Alto lead the 9th and protect the country. She asks Alto to call her 'Ana' one last time, then dies. The 9th is filled with disbelief at Anastasia's death, and Alto lets out a scream of despair.Chapter 9The next day, after a tense meeting with the 9th Regiment, Alto goes out into the city to check on the safety of the townspeople.

However, when he gets out into the city, he sees the destruction of the city as well as hostility toward the 9th and decides to check on the shopkeepers that he knows. After seeing the ruined shops, he finds out that the shopkeeper is dead and his daughter is orphaned.

Alto wanders the city, dejected, and is confronted by Elmar, who tells him to return to the castle. There, Hilda confronts him and tells him to come with the rest of the 9th to Veronica's lab to learn the truth of the Eclipse. The next day, upon going to Veronica's lab, Veronica explains the true nature of the Eclipse, the Witches, and magic: magic was created five thousand years ago by the humans who lived at that time (technolomies) as a way of channeling emotional energy, and song was used as a conduit to do so. However, the technolomies used magic for purposes of war, and over time, the technolomies began to desire death because of the endless war. This negative emotional energy turned into a great amount of magic and created (the entity known as 'god'), which took root on the moon, to fulfill their desire for death. Mother Qualia, in turn, created angels and used them to destroy the technolomies. After she destroyed them, she bestowed smaller Qualia made of pieces of herself upon five girls in order to monitor the surviving humans' emotional energy, creating the Witches. When the total emotional energy reached a certain amount, Mother Qualia would send down angels to destroy the humans again.

This was the reason that Hilda attempted to crystallize the world: to prevent the human population's emotions from being monitored by Mother Qualia. However, the Eclipse ends after about a month, so it can be outlasted.Alto returning to Lambert alone.Upon hearing this, the 9th Regiment are divided on what to do. They turn to Alto for what to do, but Alto is frozen by despair and unable to decide on a course of action. The 9th Regiment all go their separate ways, and Alto is left behind. Hilda advises him to go home for the night, which he does, alone. That night, Alto and Lisette get the news of Rosa, Lisette's mother, being found.

The two head to the infirmary and tearfully reunite with Rosa, who has heard the news of everything that has happened. She consoles Alto and Lisette, and tells Alto to follow his heart on what action to take next. Alto takes her advice to heart and decides to defeat Mother Qualia, as Elcrest did one thousand years ago, and tells Hilda of his decision. At that moment, angels attack the city, and Alto attempts to find the rest of the 9th Regiment. However, the only one he can find is Archibald, who has no will to fight, so Alto goes to fight the angels by himself, sure that the other members of the 9th will come, and is joined by Hilda. In the middle of the fight, the two other surviving Harbingers join them, but the group is still unable to hold off the angels. After a particularly critical attack, Alto attempts to charge the angels by himself, but then, the rest of the 9th finally arrive to help Alto, and the shopkeepers, having gained back their faith, heal the team.Alto speaking to the people of Lambert.Even this is not enough to totally defeat the angels, though, and Hilda tells Alto to tune and conduct her, which he does, discovering Hilda's past with Elcrest, her promise to him, and her regrets over her actions in the process.

Hilda sings her song, and with that, the 9th is finally able to defeat the angels. The 9th are welcomed back warmly by the city, and Alto speaks to the people and swears to defeat Mother Qualia, and the 9th Regiment are renamed the 'Tuning Knights.' Later, in the Knight Barracks, the Tuning Knights decide that Alto is their new leader and the new Grand Master of the knights.

The three Harbingers arrive in the barracks and request to fight alongside the Tuning Knights so that they may destroy Mother Qualia, which Alto accepts. That night, Hilda enters Alto's room and declares that she will only see him as Alto and no longer as Elcrest because they are very different people.Chapter 10The next day, during the Tuning Knights' meeting, Alto asks Hilda for her help, and Hilda says that in order to defeat Mother Qualia, the Tuning Knights will need to collect the scattered score for a song called the Celestial Hymn, which can weaken Mother Qualia enough for her to be killed. She then says that she will give more information once Veronica arrives to explain more about the Hymn, and she asks that Alto come to the Tuning Hall so that she can explain what happened one thousand years ago.Later that day, Alto comes to the Tuning Hall and sees Hilda's memories of the events of a thousand years ago. Through this, he finds out about how Elcrest failed at fighting Mother Qualia and was only able to break off a piece of her, how he was exposed to all the negative emotions of humanity by and her dark fire, and how he only got out due to Xeno sacrificing himself to save him and let the rest of his party flee. While Elcrest was saved, he was still burning with the negative emotions, so he had Hilda promise to stay on the world until he woke up and protect it from a future Eclipse until then. He was then put to sleep by the previous Water Witch, Francisca, for a thousand years to purify his soul, and during the long sleep, Alto became his own individual. After learning this and exiting Hilda's memories, Alto talks with Veronica, who tells him to go to with the rest of the Tuning Knights so that she can tell him something.

Alto complies, and at Narakiv Crater, Veronica reveals that Alto's powers as the Conductor come from another Qualia—the Celestial Qualia, which acts as the positive emotion to Mother Qualia's negative. The Tuning Knights enter Alto's spirit world and there encounter the shadows of the Witches from one thousand years ago, who they must defeat to prove they have the resolve to destroy Mother Qualia. They successfully defeat them and exit the spirit world, and after a skirmish with angels, Veronica agrees to join the Knights.Once she joins, she explains that the Celestial Hymn was divided into five parts, one of each element, given to the corresponding Witch one thousand years ago, and explains that the scores are most likely in the homes of the current Witches. With that knowledge, the Tuning Knights plan to set out to each of those locations. Before that, though, Alto finds Marie singing again, and Marie reveals to him that she has regained her memory and remembers her sister: Eve. She then passes out, and Alto begs Veronica to help her, and Veronica decides to try and figure out what exactly Marie is.Alto and the Tuning Knights then set out to acquire the scores. After a few days of searching and finding, all the Celestial Hymn scores are finally gathered and the Tuning Knights take a rest for a day. That night, only if the conditions for the true end are met, Alto finds Giselle, who tells him that a battle is coming and expresses confliction over the emotions of the party.

Alto tells Giselle to follow her heart, and she leaves. Alto goes to bed, and that night, Elcrest talks to Alto through his dreams, saying that he'd like to talk to Alto. The next morning, Alto is conflicted, and he decides to go to the Tuning Hall and confront Elcrest.Alto defeating Elcrest.Inside of his spirit world, he meets Elcrest face-to-face, and Elcrest asks him what his reason is for fighting Mother Qualia, and says that he will take Alto's body back if he doesn't have a good reason, since Elcrest has a reason to fight now: to make it up to his friends. Alto answers that he fights to protect humanity and the people he cares for. Elcrest accepts that answer, but he and Alto fight, anyway. Due to his determination, Alto defeats Elcrest after a close battle, and Elcrest bestows his powers and memories upon Alto and begs him to defeat Mother Qualia, defeat and free Xeno's soul, and to thank Hilda and tell her that he's sorry.

Alto agrees to this and exits the spirit world, now with Elcrest's powers and appearance.Alto upon inheriting Elcrest's will.Alto finds out that the city is being attacked by angels, and goes to help the Witches with defending the city. There, he helps fend off Giselle. By the end of the battle, Giselle attempts to blow herself up to destroy Alto because of her master's—Xeno's—desire. If the true ending is not unlocked, Alto will get out of the way of Giselle's explosion, but Giselle will die.If the true ending is unlocked, Alto will go to Giselle and stop her from blowing herself up, asking her what Xeno truly desires and asking her to join the Tuning Knights. Giselle flees, but comes back later and joins the party, admitting that she desires to know what Xeno's true feelings are. That night, the Witches, Marie, Dorothy, and Nonoka have a tea party with Alto in his room.

After that, if the true ending is unlocked, Alto goes outside and talks to Giselle, who shows her desire to know of emotions and her current confusion about them.Chapter XThe next day, the Witches start practicing the Celestial Hymn, and Alto goes to check up on them. After a few days of this, Alto finds Marie singing at the observatory. There, Marie tells Alto that she has regained her memories and that she is actually a piece of Mother Qualia that was cracked off by Elcrest one thousand years ago.The next day, an army of angels arrives under the Yggdrasil, with Xeno among them. Alto and the rest of the Tuning Knights head out there to stop them, and there, Alto talks with Xeno, who reveals his envy of Elcrest and his desire for power. Alto swears to defeat him because of his promise to Elcrest to save Xeno, but Xeno leaves and the Tuning Knights have to fight the angels. However, after the angels are all defeated, even more angels come down from Yggdrasil and surround the party.

Just as the Tuning Knights are about to be overwhelmed, Marie sings her song and uses its power to teleport the angels away and surround the world in a spirit world barrier to protect it. The Tuning Knights are confused by this, but Alto realizes that it is Marie and tells them to go back to the capital and that he will explain once they are there.Once the Tuning Knights return, Alto and Marie explain to them about what Marie really is. The Tuning Knights accept Marie, and Marie asks Alto a favor: to stop Eve from destroying everything. Alto agrees, and Marie passes out.Veronica explains that Marie's barrier will buy the Witches three days to get the Celestial Hymn right, and the Tuning Knights split up for the three days as the Witches set to work, with Alto dropping by occasionally to bring them stuff and check up on them. After those three days, the Celestial Hymn is finally completed, and Alto and Veronica listen to it.

The Tuning Knights decide to have a party to celebrate, which they do. After the party, Marie's song is heard and Rena runs in and tells the Tuning Knights that Marie is at the observatory.Alto and the Tuning Knights head to the observatory, where Marie says goodbye to them and thanks them for being her friends.

Marie's barrier dissipates, and Xeno comes down to the observatory to get Marie. Marie makes a deal with Xeno: she will talk to Eve and try to convince her to stop, and while she is doing that, the angels cannot attack Earth. Xeno agrees, and though Alto tries to stop it, Marie leaves with him.The Tuning Knights' spirits are lowered by this, and Alto goes back to his room.

Rena comes in and asks Alto to promise to save Marie. Alto agrees, and with his determination back, he goes and rallies the Tuning Knights and tells them that they will set out for the moon the next day.The next day, the Tuning Knights set out for the moon and fight their way up the Yggdrasil, facing angels, monsters, and copies of Giselle. When the Tuning Knights reach the moon's surface, they are confronted by Xeno once again. Alto asks him where Marie is, and Xeno replies that she will soon be completely reabsorbed by Mother Qualia.

Enraged by this, Alto and the Tuning Knights fight Xeno.Once they defeat him, Alto tells him to step aside, but then, Eve in her true form appears, reveals that Marie has been absorbed into her, and sends down an army of angels to attack Earth. Eve then resolves to kill the Tuning Knights and the hope of humanity along with them, turns Xeno into an angel to do so, and leaves for her hall. The Tuning Knights fight Xeno once again. Once they defeat him, Alto begs Xeno to stop fighting and says that he understands that Xeno wanted power to protect humanity, which he reacts angrily to. Elcrest then takes over Alto's body to bid farewell to Xeno and free his soul. Xeno allows Elcrest to kill him, and Alto regains control over his body. Then, the Tuning Knights head to Mother Qualia's Hall to confront Eve once and for all. However, once the Tuning Knights confront Eve, Marie reveals herself and says that if they kill Eve, Marie will die as well, causing Alto to feel conflicted about fighting and killing Eve.

Alto attempts to get Marie to come back to herself, and Marie almost does, but Eve reab.
